Mexico Surf Camp: Beto's Tuna Recipe

Our resident chef has done it again, the ladies here cannot stop raving about the tuna we had on the grill the other night during their Mexico Surf Camp. Here's a recipe even a beginner can wow their friends with. Take some time to find fresh tuna and reminisce about the ocean breezes and the sound of the waves crashing while you enjoy this surf camp Mexico favorite.

Ingredients:

Fresh Tuna Filets (cubed)
Olive oil
Sea salt
Fresh pepper
Worcestershire sauce

Directions:

Heat grill and let it get good and hot!
Brush tuna filets with olive oil. Brush all sides.
Rub both sides of filet with sea salt and fresh pepper.
Sprinkle worcestershire over all filets.

Throw on the grill and cook to your liking. We prefer medium rare (cooking time is equivalent to 4 to 6 sips of your favorite beer and then flip!)

Sept. 17 was California Coastal Cleanup day and here in San Diego there was lot's of work to do. Siren Surf Adventures joined cleanup organizer Wildcoast to clean up the Tijauna River Valley near Borderfield State Park. This fragile river and estuary system is the border between the USA and Mexio and has been plagued by sewage, runoff and trash for years. The good news is that for the last several years, both Mexico and the US (and organizations like Wildcoast) have been working together to develop solutions to this environmental and health problem. After all, the hazards associated with dirty river runoff don't discriminate, it affects everyone.
We were stoked to see a great turnout at the clean up including Ocean Minded Sandals who came by to help clean and give out hats to keep the sun off of all the volunteers. At least 35 tires were collected, a shipping container was filled full (thanks to an assortment of plastic bottles, styrofoam, straws, lids, old shoes, pens, toys, you name it!) and most importanly friends were made and lots of smiles created. You just cannot help but feel good after seeing all that trash that could have very easily been flushed out to our oceans and beaches, neatly collected and on its way to were it should be, in a garbage can. We just have to remind ourselves that the cleanups never end, it is a constant battle. Everytime we walk down to the beach we need to do our part. Pick up garbage when you see it, recycle and reuse. Make Coastal Cleanup Day EVERYDAY!

Summer is Almost Here and Siren Surf Adventures is Getting Ready to Celebrate with Raspberry Mojitos

That's right, summer is ALMOST here and we are already dreaming of cooling off with one of my most favorite cock-a-tails ever, the Mojito. This summer we are jazzing it up a bit, and we have been experimenting with different, delicious fruits in season so that there is no way one can possibly get bored with the Mojito. Being the daughter of a Cubana Mamma, I know a good authentic Mojito, and as any good Cubana should or would, I will share the secrets to this delightful summer specialty!

Here's what you'll need:

Start with a good quality silver rum. Bacardi is the OG. But I also love picking up different rums from my travels in Central America and the Caribbean and giving those a try.

Lots of fresh mint straight from the garden. (Mint is easy to grow and will take over. It is a good idea to plant it in it's own pot)

Fresh Key Limes. Not Persian Limes, Key Limes. They have way more juice and are sweeter.

Sugar in the raw or simple syrup. (You can make your own simple syrup at home- just equal parts sugar and water, bring to a boil then cool)

Fresh Raspberries

Soda water (or Sprite if you like a little sweeter drink)

Now:

In a classic mojito glass muddle together the juice of 2 limes with the rind, 2 tablespoons sugar or a shot of simple syrup, 3 or 4 sprigs of mint, and 3 or 4 raspberries.

Add lots of ice

Pour 2 shots of rum

Shake or stir together then top with a splash of soda water

Now go for an afternoon stand up paddle, come home and fire up the grill while you sip your summer rasberry mojito! Enjoy!

Kristy Murphy's Siren Surf Adventures and SIREN SUP turned heads at this year's Stand Up Round Up on Mission Bay in San Diego this weekend. SIREN SUP was the only women's specific SUP boards on the beach and the beautiful shapes and rad colors had not only all the ladies on the beach flocking to demo boards, but the guys could not resist as well! We had a variety of Kialoa Paddles on hand to paddle with, from the adjustable Hinalea to the brand new women's specific paddle, the Pipe.

Kristy took part in the first annual Hobie Knockout Sprint race and ended up coming in 5th in the women's open sprint. The stiff wind made for an exciting race with record breaking down wind times to upwind collisions when all the paddlers got blown off course and into each other! A great time was had by all and we are already looking forward to next years Round Up and Knockout Race!

The TnT Surf Shop in Imperial Beach, is not your average, corporate surf brand carrying, generic surf shop. Just as the drive down Palm Ave. towards Seacoast Ave. and past the pier has remained unchanged for decades, the TnT Surf Shop is also a step back in time. Remember the days when you would ride your skateboard to your local shop, hang out, get free wax, stickers and a good schooling about the local legends and stories that made your glorious hometown break special? That's what you get today at the TnT Surf Shop. Since opening in Dec. 2009, TnT has further made a commitment to showcase local artists and surfers on it's walls. December's Grand Opening Party displayed the art of local surfers, Cat Slatinsky (photography), Terry Gillard (painter), and Orlando Sherwood (sculpture).
On Saturday, May 15, the TnT Surf Shop had it's 2nd Surf Art Gala and featured the work of Manny Vargas and Adam Wraight. Former professional body boarder turned photographer, Manny V's photos range from deep blue water barrel shots to local Balinese fisherman. Adam, a local stand out surfer and full time Imperial Beach lifeguard, incorporates a mix of graffiti, stenciling, and acrylic abstract art on a variety of different mediums.

It was truly a red carpet affair with full paparazzi red carpet entry into the surf shop, lot's of lights and camera flashes, and wine on the house provided by local IB pro surfer Kyle Knox. Kyle has collaborated with Hill Estate wines to create his very own Barrel Blend, a mix of cabernet, merlot, syrah and malbec grapes. Kyle's Barrel Blend was a hit, and I (the bartender for the evening!) did not get a break all night as people returned over and over for refills.

Thanks to Manny Vargas, Adam Wraight, Kyle Knox, owners Tim and Rory Townsley, and event coordinator Cat Slatinsky for all their hard work and great efforts to make this Red Carpet Spring Art Gala one to remember!

I have to throw a shout out to the ladies of Team Siren for participating in the 1st annual SUP Jam Austin! The team was comprised of Linda McCoy Schriever, Carie Leighton Hendrick, Angela Kraybill and Camille Hudson. This was the first big SUP race to hit Austin and it was also the first SUP race these ladies had participated in, and they did us proud! Word is that a GREAT time was had by all and the SUP Jam Austin put on an awesome race. Our top finishers were Linda, 4th place in the 1.5 mile race and Camille, 10th place in the 1.5 mile race. Great job Team Siren you guys ROCK!

Jamaica, the Future of Margarita Madness!

During our last surf adventure to Zihuatanejo I was introduced to a new species of margarita. The Jamaica Margarita. Now, I don't mean to toot my own horn, but for some time I have considered myself a connoisseur of the margarita and of the process of how to go about making one of these tropical, tequila, lime yummies. But alas, then came along Jocelyn, one of our star Siren Surf Adventure pupils. It's not just that in a few short years has Jocelyn's surfing improved significantly, but she too is a connoisseur of the finer things in life, one of those things the margarita.
As luck would have it our chef, Elvira, always has our fridge stocked with beer, fresh OJ, and homemade jamaica juice. For those not schooled in the language of Mexican delights, jamaica is a type of hibiscus flower found in Mexico. The juice is made from steeping the dried flowers in water and adding just a touch of sweet - sugar, honey or agave nectar.
When Jocelyn found out about the jamaica in the fridge, she quickly went to work incorporating all the goodness till low and behold the limey green of the OG Margarita had transformed into the color of a Zihuatanejo sunset! It's hard to say what happened next, but believe me the equation surf + sun + massage + pool + jamaica margaritas = one heck of a good time!

A Little Surf Inspiration from a Siren Surf Adventures Alumni, Cat Lippincott

Make no mistake, surfing is easier if you start as a fearless, flexible, nimble 13-year old. It’s just a fact. However, I am here to tell you that it is not impossible to start later in life, develop mad skills, and get totally hooked on surfing. It happened to me at the tender age of 40! After playing tennis for 32 years, my knees started to give out and I had to find a new sport. My natural love of the ocean, and a lifelong curiosity about ‘wave riding’ (as the Hawaiians called it) -- drew me to right to surfing.
It’s now six and a half years later, and I am a different woman because I am a surfer. I left New York City after living there for 20 years and moved to the beach in Long Island. I quit my 9-5 job, rearranged my work life completely, and have figured out a way to live in Honolulu for four months each winter.
More than anything else, surfing has taught me to F L O W better through life. Trading in high heels for flip flops has a freeing effect on a girl and all those things that you deemed so intensely important before, seem to peel off like a beautiful, long wave.
So, if you are ready to surf (!) here’s a ‘must-do list’ I wish someone had given me when I started out.

-GO FOR IT. No matter what, if you want to try surfing –definitely go for it. Statistically speaking, not many women have the desire (or the balls) to surf. So by wanting to try it—you are already half way there. Don’t let your fear or negative thoughts dissuade you. You might as well start being a Water Warrior right now.

-GO TO SCHOOL. No negotiation here. Learn from the great teachers at the great all-women surf schools. Surf camp is 100% the way to go. Surfing is intense and it takes superior, experienced teachers to get you in and out of the water with safety and stoke! A full week in the water with capable instructors and enthusiastic fellow students will really get you started on the right foot! I’ve been surfing for over 6 years now and STILL go to camps and clinics to learn new skills. (Note: Cat S. at KM Siren Surf Adventures is my Goddess, Guru, and Game-changing mentor- I follow her anywhere to the ends of the earth.)

-VOW TO BECOME A GREAT PADDLER. Surfing is a lot about paddling which is a lot about upper body strength. The best women surfers have amazing paddling skills. Anything you can do helps upper body strength. Work out with light weights, swim, push ups, pull ups, any of it all or all of it will help. The longer you can paddle without getting tired, the more waves you catch and the longer your sessions can become!

-YOGA HELPS. The other part is that surfing is about balance and some flexibility. I find my yogi friends catch on and get up faster initially. That’s not to say that if you don’t do yoga you won’t be able to surf—it’s just going to be easier if you do. One of the coolest yoga studios I ever went to was in Santa Monica where all the surfers would come in right out of the water--sandy, and with dripping hair, --prop their surfboards against the wall and unroll their mats. Many pro surfers do yoga and consider it the ultimate complimentary activity to surfing.

-DON’T RUSH OUT AND BUY A BOARD TOO FAST. There are so many types of boards out there. You really need to try as many different boards as you can. Most likely you will be starting out on a long board – so try them all. Fiberglass and epoxy, soft boards and soft tops, nine feet and ten feet, thick and thin, etc… After a while you will start to get the hang of what works best for you and what helps you catch the most waves.

-DO YOUR HOMEWORK. As wacky as this sounded when a surfer told me this years ago—watching surf videos really does help. Surfing is about timing, power, strength and style. Somehow seeing people surf well over and over and over really does get into your head. It helps. I promise. (Note: Netflix has a ton of surf videos available for rent.)

-FRIENDSHIP STARTS AT THE WET SAND. I heard this gnarley dude once say that for guys who surf – friendship STOPS at the wet sand. For women – it’s completely opposite. We are natural nurturers, “includers,” and cheerleaders and we do really well with each other in the water. Stay positive, stay enthusiastic, be a safe and mindful surfer, and HAVE FUN !!!!!!!!!!

All good things have to come to an end, and it was REALLY hard to end this Siren Surf Adventure! We had a great group come join us to surf one of Mexico's most amazing waves, some of the best I have surfed! Serving up consistent waves for weeks and amazing conditions. Of course a surf trip with me is not a surf trip unless there is awesome food, and eat great food we did! There is no better place for fresh fish, lobsters and shrimp. Our chef, Elvira, had fresh fruits, juices and huevos rancheros ready for us in the morning pre surf! The surfistas that surfed with us on week 2 had the greatest pleasure of meeting and surfing with the great Linda Benson. What a treat! In case you missed out on the Jan./Feb. The art of local surf legend and 5x US Longboard Champion Terry Gillard, glass artist Orlando Sherwood(has made the trophies for Vans Triple Crown of Surfing), and surf photographer Cat Slatinsky was debuted on Friday December 13 for the local IB surf community. Amongst the who's who were pro ripper Kyle Knox, Wildcoast's Serge Dedina, pro longboarder Bianca Valenti and local legends Mike and Christine Gillard just to name a few. Thanks to all who stopped by to support these awesome artists and we look forward to seeing you all at the next exhibit.

I went for an awesome full moon paddle tonight on San Diego Bay. It was beautiful! Some boats in the marina had put up their Christmas lights as well as the Hotel Del Coronado. Night paddles are great, just don't forget a light or glow stick to put on your board so that other vessels can see you!

It has been the most beautiful fall weather in Southern California for the past week. Perfect warm sunshine, gentle winds and.....small waves. We cannot have it all! Oh and the water temp. has dropped a little. I just took out the old 3/2 and dusted the cobb webs off, I put the spring suit away till next summer. Waves or not, with this weather, I am not going to miss a chance to get out in the water. So this morning, I grabbed my log and my SUP and headed to the beach. It is amazing how a longboard can make any wave a good time. Full tide and 2 ft. and I still got some fun rides. Just when I thought "it just does not get any better than this" I went in and grabbed my Stand Up Paddle board. Yep, you guessed it, it was even more fun! No sets in sight, it's all right! I can paddle out to the end of the pier and back. Check out bait fish and dolphins. Then a set appears on the horizon and it's back to the inside just in time to catch a left peeler with a nice little noseride section. The best part about SUP noserides, when the wave does not want to go anymore, just start paddling! Helps make that noseride last a bit longer.

Whether you decide to ride a retro singlefin or a Stand Up Paddle board, just get out there and enjoy those sunny days!

These are the days when I re-fall in love with my Stand Up Paddle board. Weather is perfect, it was a classic sunset and the surf is 1-2 ft. I almost took out my longboard yesterday for my afternoon session, but I made a last minute decision and grabbed the SUP board. I am stoked I did!

Facebook is awesome, it has given me the opportunity to connect with friends old and new. I was excited when my friend Molly, we went to Jupiter High School together, found me on Facebook not too long ago. It was perfect timing because she was able to let me know that she would be visiting San Diego with her husband and son. I thought the perfect way to hang out and catch up would be on the water in the San Diego Bay! She had never been Stand Up Paddling, so I got her on a board and we headed out for a cruise. She was nervous at first, but by the end of our paddle she was totally confident. We got to cruise the bay on a beautiful day while chatting up a storm and catching up after not seeing each other for 8 years! There were cheers from the beach from her husband and son who were amazed at her SUP skills! There you have it, Stand Up Paddling, bringing friends together one stroke at a time. Wildcoast's 8th Annual Dempsey Holder Oceanfest and Contest

With more than 180 participants, the 6th Annual WiLDCOAST Dempsey Holder Memorial Ocean Festival and Surf Contest was the largest surfing competition ever held in South San Diego County. On Sunday October 18 on the south side of the Imperial Beach Pier, more than 500 spectators lined the beach to watch surfers from all over San Diego County surf beautiful 2-4 waves.

“We were absolutely stunned by the record number of participants who turned out and the amazing Aloha spirit of the crowd,” said Serge Dedina, Executive Director of WiLDCOAST. “This was by far the most successful event we’ve run so far. And we were blown away by the spirit of giving by the County of San Diego and Billabong and by community members and businesses who sponsored dozens of children who able to participate free of charge.”

The annual event was made possible by support from Billabong, whose CEO Paul Naude also donated a beautiful Rusty surfboard. A County of San Diego Community Enhancement Grant was made possible thanks to the support of County Supervisor Greg Cox who made an appearance to meet contest participants. Additional major sponsors included TNT Surfboards, Novak Surfboard Designs, Morey Boogie, Pacific Realty, Emerald City Boarding Source, Adept Process Services and Alan Cunniff Construction. Additional supporters included Katie’s Coffee, Cowabunga, Surf Hut, Oakley, Volcom, Osiris, GoPro, and many others.

An early stand out was El Cajon's Vito Roccoforte who, despite not advancing his Junior Men's heat, nearly pulled a radical reverse on a south site left-hander. In the Junior Men's final, Mason Darleux dropped a 7 with two powerful forehand cracks on a pier bowl right but it wasn't enough to catch Jay Christenson who also won the Boys division final. Former Women’s Longboard World Champ, Kristy Murphy, made two finals; winning the women's division and placing 5th in the Open SUP. Vincent Claunch was a standout in the Menehune Boys Expression Session with stylish lip blasts and fin hucks. Mike Gillard made three finals, placing 2nd in the Masters, 1st in the Longboard and 3rd in the SUP. Drew Erichson won the stacked bodyboard division and Jahvin Bowman took home the top rated amateur award and a year sponsorship with Morey Boogie. Erik Leksell won the top rated youth award and a slew of gear from Morey and Churchill.

This year the Dempsey highlighted the progress that has been made along the U.S.-Mexico border to clean up the coast. With a new sewage treatment plant under construction on the U.S. side of the border, three new sewage plants operating in the Tijuana-Rosarito Beach region, and the signing of legislation by Governor Schwarzenegger to fund cleaning up Tijuana, the WiLDCOAST “Clean Water Now” campaign has made a significant contribution to protecting our coast and ocean.

Overnight Surf Adventure! The San Elijo Camp Grounds

It's October and the weather in California is just beautiful! It is time for a road trip and adventure... camping! My friend Cat has an awesome '71 VW bus and we decided to load it up with surfboards, tequila and guacamole and take off up the coast. San Elijo is the perfect base camp for an overnight surf trip. To the south is Cardiff Reef and to the north Swamis and right out front is Pipes and Turtles. We surfed all afternoon, made a fire, whipped out the guacamole and mixed up some margaritas. Then the next morning we woke up early to beautiful waves and weather and surfed all morning. Sometimes I forget how easy it is to create an awesome adventure in your own backyard. Camping is cheap, accessible and so fun! So grab a tent, your favorite board and firewood and get out and create your own surf adventure!

Check it out! Last weekend PINK waves were breaking off the IB Pier! I went out for a surf in this crazy non-toxic dye. So weird cruising down the face of the wave and everywhere you look, PINK!

So why the crazy pink dye? Scripps Institute is conducting a research study to see how quickly the ocean currents would send sewage spills, run-off, ect. down the beach. What's the verdit? That the currents move quick! The dye went from the Tijuana River mouth to the IB Pier in about 10 minutes!

We just wrapped up the Jule and Siren Surfboards "Ride My Board Day" in Oceanside this weekend. We lucked out with awesome weather which helped get everyone out to the beach for some fun in the sun! Keep-A-Breast came out to support and represent for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. My friend Julie Cox was demo-ing her line of surfboards in the waves while I had the SUP boards going on demo runs around Oceanside Harbor. I had never paddled the harbor before, it was awesome. There is a dock where all the seals hang out and swim. I was able to paddle right over and get a great birds eye view of them swimming from the Stand Up Paddle board. Later it was back to the beach to fire up the grill and another Oceanside surf session!

I miss Florida, well I don't miss the flat spells, but with a SUP and a boat everyday is an adventure no matter what size the surf is. Although my last 2 days visiting my family in Jupiter where blessed with 2 ft. peelers, for the most part there were no waves to be found. So, my friend Lindsey and I took the boat out to look for some new paddle spots and adventures. The boat took us to some cool mangrove canals and out in the ocean we found a manta ray to paddle with. The boat is an added plus, but really all you need is your board, paddle and sunscreen to have some really good fun!

We just wrapped up our second annual Montauk Sessions in Montauk, NY! An awesome group of ladies came out to be a part of our weekend warrior surf clinic. The northeast dished out a day of rain, a day of rain/sun, then finally on Sunday came SUNSHINE! The waves went from challenging to fun, and despite the crazy weather we all had a blast. When the waves were too choppy and big, we went Stand Up Paddling on Lake Montauk. The lake offered a protected bay out of the wind, where we could get the hang of the the SUP boards and practice paddling techniques. After the paddle we hit up the famous Surf Lodge for some great food and awesome mojitos! On Sunday, the surf was perfect for everyone to really push their surfing skills to the next level. Everyone conquered fears, perfected turtle rolls and got awesome long rides! The sun and perfect little peeler waves lasted thru Monday and Tuesday, so the ladies scored some super ultra mellow days.

KAB - Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself Ladies!!

The first Coronado Adventure has come to a close, and I am bummed. We had a great group of ladies join us for a week of surfing, yoga, massage, SUPing, wine and LOTS of laughs! I did not want it to end. Everyone in the group had a break-through moment with their surfing during the week. Whether it was learning to maneuver through the impact zone, catching waves solo, or cutting back, their surfing improved before our very eyes. Mother Nature came through as the waves were awesome and we all got PLENTY of warm sunshine! Shockingly to me, one of my favorite times during the week came at sunset where are yoga classes were held, overlooking San Diego Bay from Glorietta Park. Our yoga instructor, Adriana, led us through some awesome post surf stretches that helped us all give 100% in the surf the following day. I also want to give a shout-out to our massage therapist Juda, who gave our tired muscles relief with awesome massages! Yesterday I got together with fellow longboard rippers, Cat Slatinsky and 2009 World Champ Jenn Smith, for a surf in lovely but quirky I.B. Short for Imperial Beach, I.B. is old school California and a perfect place to surf when there is no surf! The exposed beach breaks always pick up loads of swell and there has been minimal wind with this lovely late summer weather we have been having!!

After a fun surf it was off to El Tapatio for my favorite Huevos Rancheros. They are the best in the South Bay that's for sure. It's hard to decide between that and my other El Tapatio favorite, chicken enchiladas!!

Next time in Austin, be sure to take a road trip to the nearby metropolis of Kendalia. There you can SUP the Guadalupe River and afterwards stop by the local mini mart for an ice cold Dr.Pepper and a new chainsaw!
No visit to Austin is complete without a stop to the Salt Lick BBQ. Best BBQ this side of the Mississippi. All that BBQ has to be washed down with a cold Lone Star Beer. Oh and the pie! Did I mention PIE!!! Yummy, coconut creme, perfect poof of meringue that almost touches the sky!

One more thing... get out on Lake Austin and get your adrenaline pumping doing death spirals while being pulled behind the boat on a Mach 5 tube. Remember to wear extra layers of bathing suits!

Don't Mess with Texas! Siren's SUP Austin Clinic

After a 2 day drive through Arizona, New Mexico and West Texas, 2 girls, 7 boards, 7 paddles, clothes and a cooler came roaring into Austin on a lovely Memorial Day! We came into town with a few days to spare before the clinics started, which was great because our Austin posse, Camille, LC, Greg, Carrie and Angela had lot's of activities lined up for us to do during our stay there. The first thing we wanted to do was paddle Town Lake, also known as Lady Bird Lake, and get the lay of the land, or water in this case.

Town Lake is a paddlers paradise! Perfect flat water paddling, no motorized boats allowed, clean, lot's of beautiful wildlife, it is great! Our friend Camille brought her dog Sadie Sue with us to paddle that first day. Sadie fell in love with paddling and ended up paddling with us everyday of the camp, and she became the official mascot and got the most attention from paparazzi!!

There are heaps of other lakes around the Austin area to paddle, but for the Siren Clinic we stuck to Town Lake since there is no boat traffic and is fairly protected from the wind. Each morning we would meet at the base of the MOPAC bridge, do a quick land lesson then we would hit the water. The group would paddle towards downtown Austin then we would take a detour through Barton Springs. Barton Spring is BEAUTIFUL! It is a naturally spring fed creek, crystal clear water that was perfect for what I call SUP Snorkeling, checking out what is beneath the water from standing tall on the Stand Up boards. Turtles, Bass, Alligator Gar, and the rare Texas Blue could all be seen in the creek.

On May 29 Austin Canoe and Kayak hosted a SUP in-store class and demo. We had a nice crowd gather to check out the new Siren SUP line, meet the Siren team and everyone got to take home some cool SUP swag from Siren, Costa Del Mar and Kialoa! Congrats to Carrie Leighton for taking home an awesome new pair of Costa Del Mar's, the BEST polarized sunglasses out there!

We meet so many great people in Austin and cannot wait to come back! We are already planning another trip there to paddle and eat BBQ as soon as possible.

Siren's SUP Austin Clinic, May 29-31

Well, it is time to hit the road once again! It feels like I just got back from Mexico and right as I started to settle down and prepare for summer in California, an opportunity knocks and I am off to Texas! That's right, YEA HA, I am loading up the truck with Stand Up Paddle boards and I am hitting the road. My destination is Austin, the weirdest little town in Texas and in Austin is a little body of water called Lady Bird Lake. Where there's a lake, there must be Stand Up Paddling! So that's what I am heading east to do, teach the local folks about this awesome new sport that is bound to take the world by storm! Believe it or not, I have many friends that surf in Texas all the time, not the most consistent surf, but they surf non-the-less. I know about waiting for surf, after all I am from Florida, the sunshine state, NOT wave state! I know my Texas surf buddies are going to be stoked to check SUPing out, it will give them the opportunity to surf every day of the year!

Siren's "Get On Board" Demo Days:Locals Surf Shop

Our final stop in South Florida was at the radical Locals Surf Shop in Jupiter FL! Jimmy and his wife Katie are local rippers and run a great surf shop with an awesome and knowledgeable staff. Siren started off the weekend with Locals on Saturday night at the Abacoa Town Center in Jupiter for Trik Flix. Trik Flix is a part of the Palm Beach Film Festival's student showcase of film and allows youth 25 years old and younger to submit their extreme sports videos at a chance to win a $10,000 scholarship. Later that night, my friend Mikey DeTemple screened his new longboard movie "Picaresque". Costa Del Mar did a drawing for another pair of awesome polarized "Switchfoot" sunglasses and gave out heaps of free swag! The 9'0 Siren SUP board and Kialoa's new adjustable paddle, the Hinalea, were there on display and attracting quite a crowd!

The next day, everyone met up on a beautiful little beach along the intracoastal waterway to try out Siren Surfboards new Stand Up Paddle line. It was a typically perfect South Florida day, lots of warm sunshine and the water in the intracoastal was especially clear and turquoise. Guys, gals and kids all come out to give the 9'0 and 11'0 Siren a spin and a great time was had by all!

Our last stops for Siren's "Get on Board" Demo Days was in my home town of Jupiter, Fl. It was great to see all my friends and hang out together on the water! Everyone was so excited to try the 9'0 and 11'0 Siren SUP Board and the turnout proved it!

It all started on a beautiful Friday afternoon at the Jupiter Outdoor Center(JOC) and Guanabanas Restaurant. It was a perfect day and a perfect venue for taking the Sirens SUP's for a test run. Those who did not actually hit the water had a great time watching from land with a cold beer in hand! If you are ever in the area please go by and check out what is going on at the Jupiter Outdoor Center, they are located right on the Intercoastal Waterway across from the famous Burt Reynolds Park on A1A. Siren's "Get On Board" Demo Days: Island Water Sports

We had a great day in Deerfield Beach, Florida with Island Water Sports! Crystal clear turquoise water, light winds and 85 degrees, you just cannot ask for a better day to Stand Up Paddle. A great crowd showed up to "Get on Board" with the Siren crew. We had kids fighting over the 9'0 Siren SUP and a first time SUP mom stroked the 11'0 Siren with ease!

Heaps of thanks to Island Water Sports for hosting this great event. Costa del Mar Sunglasses was on location to hand out free swag and they raffled off a pair of the awesome "Switchfoot" sunglasses. Everyone got to have a custom sized paddle thanks to Kialoa's new "Hinalea" adjustable paddle, one paddle fits all! Thanks to Lindsay Fink, photographer extraordinaire, for all the help and great photos!

Pipes Beach Day

Saturday's always seem to be the perfect day to load up the boards, pack a lunch and head to the beach. This past Saturday was especially perfect. The last day of February in San Diego, seemed like the last day of August, it was like summer! It was a perfect setting for getting some friends together and meeting for a surf session at Pipes in Encinitas. There were all sizes and shapes of surfboards and I love surfing and watching my friends rip it up on their favorite shred stick. My friends Julie and Prue took the new Siren SUP out for a spin and it was fun to see them paddle out and catch a few. I wish there were more Saturdays in the week, that would be awesome!

Cruising the Coranado Cays

It was a beautiful afternoon to take a paddle through the Coranado Cays in San Diego today. The Cays are a series of interconnected canals that run out into the San Diego Bay. This kind of set up made it a great place for a leisurely paddle well protected from the strong afternoon winds. The great thing about Stand Up Paddling is being able to throw on a pair of shorts and a sweat shirt and hop on the board and go! This is "no hassle" surfing, but with all the same fun and a great option when the surf gets blown out in the afternoon!

New for 2009! Siren Surfboards unveils the newest addition to its awesome line of surfboards, The Stand Up Paddle model, or simply the SUP. The SUP currently comes in 2 different sizes, depending on the riders size and what type of paddling you plan to do, flat water or in the surf.

2 summers ago I tried Stand Up Paddling for the first time, although I was instantly captivated by this new form of surfing, the other thought that entered my mind was " I want to do this, but..... how in the world will I ever be able to tote around this 12 ft. board I am going to need!" Well, things have come along way in the sport in 2 years and the standard size of the boards have gotten shorter and a little less massive.

I think 2009 however, will belong to the SUP by Siren. All you ladies out there listen up, you must try this board! The SUP EZ2 is the perfect sized board for flat water paddling and if you are looking for a real cruiser. The extra round nose and touch of extra thickness make this the perfect beginner board as well. All the stability you need in a under 10 ft, totally manageable, take off the car by yourself, walk 2 blocks to the water without giving yourself permanent neck injury package. The other size Siren offers, simply the EZ, is perfect for those paddlers that weigh up to 140 lbs. or the more experienced paddler. This board is a blast in the surf, it nose rides great and the rounded pin tail really lets you cut loose some awesome turns! Both size boards have a "pontoon" shaped bottom that adds lots of stability while at the same time increase the speed of paddling with less effort. Genius!

So, all you ladies who have been wanting to try Stand Up Paddling but just could not imaging having to paddle, maneuver and carry those massive 12 ft. boards, the time is now, go out and get your hands on the Siren SUP!

Jupiter Dayz

The adventure continues.... After my trip up to Washington DC, I headed south to spend some more time with my family and visit friends in my home town of Jupiter, FL. Jupiter is such a beautiful place and I have always said, if the waves were just a little more consistent, I would never have travelled anywhere else to look for surf. I mean, our water rarely dips under 70 degrees and we get that great clear Caribbean blue color. Not only can you surf out in our waters, but there is great fishing, the diving and snorkeling is great and you can basically do anything on the water all year long. During my visit home I spent a lot of time on the Intercoastal Waterway, our inland water way system that runs just along the coast. This time of year, the manatees are migrating up the coast after visiting South Florida in search of warmer water. Manatees are one of my favorite marine mammals, they are like the elephants of the ocean! I discovered one great way to check out these awesome creatures is by Stand Up Paddling. You can just cruise along with them as they move up the waterway in search of the sea grasses they eat. Since your standing, you get such a great visual perspective and you can spot the animals from far, especially if you have a great pair or polarized sunglasses, like my Costa del Mar Sunglasses! If you ever get to Florida and get a chance, check out the Florida Manatees via SUP, it is an awesome experience!

Kialoa's Methane Paddle

I just wanted to give a shout out to Kialoa Paddles for creating such a rad SUP Paddle. I have their new Methane Paddle and it is awesome! Definitely the best paddle I have put in my hands yet. It has an oval shaped shaft that molds to your hands perfectly, the T shaped handle is super functional and has a smaller 8 inch wide blade. For all you ladies out there listen up! This is a great paddle for us! Being a woman paddler who rides a smaller SUP board (I am 5'3 and 130 pounds) I have found that the Methane takes much less energy to move through the water because of the smaller blade but still provides that quick momentum when you need it with the least amount of effort. All the elements you need in a paddle for the surf as well! Did I mention it just feels like "butta" in your hands? When you put this paddle in your hands, you will not want to let it go. A Surfer Girl in Our Nations Capital

I know that Washington DC is not known as a prime surf destination, I mean after all is it possible to shread the Potomac? Maybe in a white water raft, but not a surf board! But hey, this has been my most recent adventure at any rate and I believe it is a time when every surfer, and everybody for that matter take some time to think about what principles this country is based on and take a moment to look at how far we the United States have come in such a relatively short amount of time. I must say the 4 days I spent in the nation's capital were beautiful, sunny crisp days. Beautiful weather for walking around the Mall, touring my most favorite museums ever, the Smithsonian's, and taking up close looks at the beauty and detail of buildings such as the Capital Building and the White House. Taking a drive around the Washington Monument I began to think to myself it would be fun to Stand Up Paddle in the Reflecting Pool but I think I would be arrested if I tried anything like that! No matter where I go, surfing is always on my mind, waves or no waves! Besides touring DC, taking walks along the Potomac River and eating great food, I got to see an NBA Basketball game, the Washington Wizards vs. the Denver Nuggets. Great family friends gifted my family seats on the court, the best seats ever! It was amazing! The home team went down pretty hard to the Nuggets, but it was a blast no matter who the victor! Overall, although not a surf trip, Washington was a great adventure and I had such a great time taking in the sights, sounds and tastes of our nation's capital!

SUP - My Newest Passion!

For those of you who have not tried it, you need to! I am talking about Stand Up Paddling or SUP for short. It is my newest obsession and after surfing for 10 years I can honestly say it is also the best cross training for surfing I have done, and the most fun! SUPing is done on an oversized longboard, the size of the board is determined by the riders height and weight. Then there is the paddle, it is basically a longer version of an outrigger canoe paddle. The height of the paddle is determined by the height of the paddler plus about 8 inches.

SUPing can be done anywhere from lakes and rivers to the ocean. It is just as fun paddling alone or with a group of friends. During a recent trip visiting my home state of Florida, SUPing enabled me to stay in surf shape even during a couple week flat spell! So if you cannot get to the beach, it's been flat for weeks or you just don't feel like battling the crowds try SUPing. It is a ton of fun, a great core workout and a great way to cross train for your next surf trip.

I talked about the NW swell we are getting here in San Diego. Well I got a couple nice shots of North County and South County. It was beautiful conditions and nice while it lasted and I am glad I took advantage because tomorrow comes a forecasted 5 days of rain! Enjoy the photos!

Spray Painting to Give an Old Surfboard New Spunk!

There has been an awesome run of NW swell for the past few days here in San Diego, all over California for that matter. I am a Florida girl at heart so the furthest north I surf is Malibu, and that is usually just in the summer! This swell has been such a nice little gift, not only the great waves but the weather is amazing. There have been warm 80 degree off shores all day and skin burning sunshine all day long. It has been fabulous. In preparation of the new swell I decided to give my Siren 9'0 carbon fiber longboard a face lift. It has a white deck and a neon green bottom that has slowly faded over time from long days sitting on the beach in the sun in Mexico. So I went to Home Depot, bought some Neon Pink, Purple and Clear spray paint, some masking tape and went to town on some stencils. Pirates are my favorite and I have been known to wear some skulls, so my idea bloomed and my favorite pirate saying was guiding me..."Arrrrr, Walk Me Plank!" Here is my board and my guide to a decent spray job.

1. Before you start spray painting your board, make sure all wax is removed and the bottom/deck is totally clean.

2. Tape off the area you want to spray. Tape down the stencils where you want them to be.

3. Lightly sand the area you are going to paint with a really fine sand paper. You just want to rough up the surface a little so the paint adheres better and will hopefully stay on longer.

4. Now you are set to spray. Put a nice even layer, let dry for 10-15 min., then spray another layer of paint. Repeat this till it looks like you have the right opaqueness/ clearness.

5. Let dry 15-20 min. then peel off masking tape/stencils.

6. After you have completed your design the last thing is to let it al dry really well, then put a layer of clear spray (I like the glossy shiny finish over the satin) over the whole design.

And poof, you've got a shred stick that looks new and exciting again!

Back In San Diego!

I just got back from doing a surf tour over the New Years week in Mazatlan, Mexico. It is nice to get back to San Diego and this weather is such a pleasant surprise! The days are warm, lovely Santa Anna winds and plenty of sunshine. Now this feels like Southern California! This weather has been perfect for Stand Up Paddling and I have spent the days since I have been back SUPing the pier at Imperial Beach and the San Diego Bay. Perfect half foot waves and glassy conditions, exactly what I look for when I want to surf on my SUP board. I have a new board on the way, so stay tuned cause next week I am headed to the Channin/Siren surfboard factory to pick it up! It is going to be quite an exciting moment, nothing better than picking up a new board!
